Healthy Eating Tips For Holiday Parties
‘Tis the season to celebrate and as people return to hosting and attending parties in person this holiday season, there’s always one thing at the centerpiece of each event and that’s the menu. With cakes, cookies, and other decadent holiday foods on display, it’s easy to overindulge. Here are three easy tips to help you maintain healthy eating this holiday season:
1. Eat Before You Go
Arriving at a party on an empty stomach is rarely a good idea, especially if you are unsure what’s on the menu. Whether you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or are keeping yourself accountable this holiday season, it’s advisable to eat a light meal before attending a holiday party. You can ensure you are satiated before your arrival and help you avoid helping yourself to too many canapes. Also, be careful to not overdo it at home before you leave for the party, many hosts pride themselves on their holiday spread, so you may want to save room to savor that special dish your host so thoughtfully prepared.
2. Mix Your Drinks
Festive libations are often on the menu, so try to alternate your beverages with a glass of water so you stay hydrated and can mitigate your liquid calorie intake. Choose beverages lower in sugar, cut your cocktail with seltzer water, and go easy on the eggnog, which is high in sugar, calories, and fat.
3. Keep it Fresh
Snack on foods like crudities, mixed nuts, and charcuteries if available. The protein and fats found in nuts, cheeses, and meats will help sustain your energy, while fresh veggies high in fiber will help with digesting any sugary confections you may sample.
