Maintain Your Skin Monday: My Updated AM & PM Skincare Routines For Fall
My skincare routines are geared around three things: hydration, moisturization and exfoliation every day of the year and most everything I use comes from the drugstore (a few products come from Trader Joe’s and are drugstore priced). You can find really good skincare without breaking the bank, so after some trial and error over the years, I have created skincare routines for fall (and winter) that work for my skin, and everything is affordable too! So, before we dive into my updated skincare routines, my skin is mature (I am 59 yrs. old) and dry to very dry (depending on the time of year), so the skincare products I use will not be for everyone. So, with that being said, let’s get into it starting with my morning skincare routine (all products listed are in the order I use each one):
Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Stress Control Power Cream Wash ($8.49 for 6 oz.)
I work out every morning and this is the cleanser I use in the shower. It has 2% salicylic acid, green tea, and cucumber, does not dry out my skin and is perfect for cleansing my skin after my morning workouts. (I use this year-round).
The Ordinary 7% Glycolic Acid Toning Solution ($10 for 8 oz.)
This toner has 7% glycolic acid, amino acids, aloe vera, ginseng and Tasmanian Pepperberry. I use this every morning with an exfoliating cotton round after cleansing my skin and I love this!! It’s not drying and makes my skin feel smooth, so if you are looking to add glycolic acid into your skincare routine, I recommend starting with this toner! (I also use this year-round)
Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner ($3.99 for 4 oz.)
I spray this toner all over my face and neck and let it absorb into my skin. My skin feels refreshed and hydrated. Great inexpensive facial spray toner.
This French line of skincare is new to me, but I am loving the 3 products they sent me that I use in my AM routine: 1. Niacinamide 8.5% & NAG 4% ($5.75 for 1 oz.), 2. Bakuchiol 3% & Astaxanthin ($12.25 for 1 oz.) 3. Purifying Manuka Oil ($12 for 1 oz. I apply this after my moisturizer). Since I have incorporated these products into my AM routine, I have noticed a difference in my skin with more brightness, less texture and more hydration and I totally recommend all 3!
Full of the Earth Vitamin E Cream ($3.67 for 2 4 oz. jars)
This cream is very moisturizing. I use this on my face, under my eyes and my skin loves vitamin E, so if you skin is dry/very dry, give this cream a try.
Eucerin Daily Protection Face Lotion SPF 30 ($9.19 for 4 oz.)
We all need to be using SPF every day and this lightweight, hydrating lotion is great for sensitive skin and has broad spectrum SPF 30 too! (I use this year-round too)
Carmex Lip Balm ($2.94 for a 3 pk.)
Lips need care just as much as our skin does and I have been using this in the morning (and throughout the day and before bed) for a long time. It is just the best lip balm in my opinion!
That is my morning skincare routine and takes around 5-7 minutes to do. Now let’s get into my evening skincare routine (a few of the products I use in the morning I also use at night, so there will be a few repeats) that takes about the same time as the morning and includes the best makeup removing cleanser ever:
Trader Joe’s All-In-One Facial Cleanser ($5.99 for 8.45 oz.)
This gel foaming cleanser washes away all traces of makeup, eye makeup (including waterproof eye and face makeup) without burning my eyes, however, since this is a foaming cleanser, it does dry my skin out a bit, but this is the best makeup remover cleanser I have ever used and highly recommend.
Equate Beauty Hydrating Facial Cleanser ($5.42 for 12 oz.)
For my second cleanse, I use this cleanser for normal to dry skin, does not leave your skin dry after cleansing and I have been using for a few years now and it is comparable to the CeraVe hydrating cleanser and is half the price! If you have dry skin, this is the cleanser for you!
Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner ($3.99 for 4 oz.)
I also use this facial toner in the PM and leaves my skin hydrated and ready for the next step.
Acne Free 0.1% Adapalene Gel Acne Treatment ($10.99 for 0.5 oz.)
This “was only available by prescription now sold over the counter” retinoid gel is for acne, however I have read that there are anti-aging benefits as well, so if you have been thinking about inquiring about prescription tretinoin, give this a try to see how your skin reacts to using a prescription strength retinoid. I have been using this for a couple of months now and I have noticed a slight difference in my skin’s texture and tone (I know using a retinoid will take time to see any significant results).
Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Cream ($3.67 for 2 4 oz. jars) – This cream does double duty as a night and eye cream too! Again, I recommend this cream if you have dry/very dry skin.
Equate Beauty Petroleum Jelly Skin Protectant ($2.53 for 13 oz.)
My last PM skincare step is “slugging” my skin with petroleum jelly. Using this before bed helps seal in moisture while I sleep and helps to repair the moisture barrier too. If you have dry/very dry skin, I recommend “slugging” with petroleum jelly every night before bed.
Carmex Lip Balm ($2.94 for a 3 pk.)
Again, before bed I apply this balm over my lips and wake up to soft lips every morning.
That’s it! My AM and PM skincare routines are simple, not a whole lot of steps and affordable. You can find all of these products at your local drugstores, mass retailers, or Trader Joe’s, and until Wednesday my friends, be happy, healthy, and beautiful!
