Transitioning Your Summer Skincare Routine To A Fall Skincare Routine

The leaves are changing color and the temperatures are dropping, so it’s time to bid farewell to the summer sun and adjust your skincare routine to suit the cooler, drier days of fall. The transition from summer to fall is an ideal opportunity to reassess your skincare needs and make necessary adjustments. In this blog post, we will explore the steps you can take to ensure your skin stays healthy, hydrated, and radiant throughout the autumn season…

Exfoliation: Gentle Is The Key

During the summer, exfoliating frequently helps remove the buildup of sweat, sunscreen, and excess oil. However, as the weather cools down, your skin may become more sensitive and prone to dryness. Switch to a gentler exfoliant, such as a mild chemical exfoliator with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). These will help to remove dead skin cells without stripping your skin of its natural oils. (I love this 12% enhanced renewal glycolic acid cream from Alpha Skin Care. Gentle on my skin and no irritation).

Moisturize Thoroughly

Fall weather often brings lower humidity levels, which can lead to dry and dehydrated skin. To combat this, opt for a richer moisturizer than you used during the summer months. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and fatty acids to help lock in moisture and strengthen your skin’s barrier. (Nivea Crème is my holy grail moisturizer for my face! This thick cream has repaired my moisture barrier and I use this twice a day everyday, even in the summer months).

Sunscreen Is Still Essential

Don’t put your sunscreen away just yet! UV rays are present year-round, and protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful effects is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it daily, even on cloudy fall days. (I have been using this SPF 30 lotion from Eucerin for years now. I love this that much).

Hydrate From The Inside Out

While skincare products can help, hydration starts from within. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Incorporate more hydrating foods into your diet, such as fruits and vegetables with high water content. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon can also be soothing and hydrating choices.

Transition To A Thicker Night Cream

As temperatures drop, consider using a thicker night cream to replenish your skin’s moisture while you sleep. Look for products containing ingredients like retinol, peptides, or antioxidants to repair and rejuvenate your skin during the night. (although I use the Nivea Crème twice a day, I was using this moisturizing cream from CeraVe twice a day. It has ceramides and niacinamide and is a wonderful moisturizing cream for face and body).

Protect Your Lips

Your lips can become dry and chapped in the fall weather, so don’t forget to include a good lip balm in your skincare routine. Look for balms with natural ingredients like beeswax, Shea butter, or coconut oil to soothe and hydrate your lips. (I have been using Carmex Original Lip Balm for years. This keeps my lips hydrated and soft. I have on if these in pretty much every room of my house).

Combat Seasonal Acne

For some, fall can bring changes in humidity and temperature that trigger acne breakouts. Adjust your skincare routine accordingly by using a gentle, acne-fighting cleanser and spot treatment. Avoid over-drying your skin, as this can exacerbate the issue. (I love Neutrogena’s Acne Stress Control Power Cream Wash. This has aloe vera and green tea and does not irritate my skin. I use this every morning in the shower and it’s a holy grail product for me).

Humidify Your Environment

Invest in a humidifier to maintain healthy moisture levels in your indoor environment. Heated indoor air during the fall and winter can be extremely drying to the skin. A humidifier can help counteract this by adding moisture back into the air. (I have a humidifier in my home and I love it! My skin stays hydrated and soft! Having a humidifier in the home is a must for me).

Transitioning your summer skincare routine to a fall skincare routine is essential for maintaining healthy and radiant skin as the weather changes. By adjusting your exfoliation, moisturization, and protection methods, you can ensure that your skin stays hydrated, nourished, and protected throughout the autumn season.
